Riverford Field Kitchen - Sunday Lunch
Giles Coren, well-known TV presenter and restaurant critic, gave Riverford Field Kitchen a 9/10 rating and said it was 'The lunch of of my life'. WOW! After that review, lunch at Riverford Field Kitchen went to the top of our 'TO DO' list.
Nestled in the Dart River Valley, Riverford Field Kitchen is only a 30 minute drive from our home. This is great and awful at the same time. Once you get bitten by the Riverford bug it's hard not to want to make lunch a regular activity. Yes, it's THAT good!
The setting is stunning! Hidden from view, you walk through a miniature forest, down a narrow path, along an orchard and finally through a break in the trees you see.....
the Field Kitchen! It comes as a surprise, this large, new building surrounded by wide borders filled with herbs and edible flowers.
The attitude is warm and welcoming, very casual. The staff are brilliant, the perfect combination of attentiveness, efficiency and friendliness.
Enter the building and you find yourself face to face with the chefs and the most delicious aroma of baking bread, roasting meat and vegetables. The menu changes according to the produce ready to be picked from the fields. It's seasonal, local and organic.
The furnishings are rustic and simple, long trestle tables and benches. Meals are served family style. Large platters and bowls are placed along the table to be passed from person to person. If you are not friends with your fellow diners when you arrive you will be by the end of the meal!
Ordinarily, I would photograph the food but this time you will have to make do with the menu board. I was far too busy enjoying my lunch for photography! What isn't listed on the menu are the dessert options. Today's options are lemon marscarpone cheesecake, apple and pear cake, chocolate and raspberry flour-less cake, custard tart, hot sticky toffee pudding, fruit filled meringue. All served with creme anglaise or rich heavy cream.
Unlike most restaurants, you are welcome to linger after your meal. The staff encourage you to walk into the orchards and surrounding fields, pick a few of the ripe berries or other fruits to nibble as you enjoy the lush Devon countryside.
Bring your wellies and your appetite! Expect to spend at least two or three hours enjoying the food and the surroundings. Riverford Field Kitchen is more than a dining experience, it's a destination!

The cost of our "someday" trip to England keeps rising with all the great resturant places that I MUST eat in. Definitely put this place on our to-do list!
