Sydney, the Sourdough Starter, is TOAST

After days in a jar, making a failed escape attempt, and getting far too big for his own good,  Sydney the sourdough starter has been turned into this:

I don't think he looks too bad for my first attempt at baking bread from a home made sourdough starter.   He may be a little wonky in shape but he is delicious.

I am sure as he matures and ages, Sydney will develop more complex flavours.  I am very pleased with the results and it all started with a cup of flour and some warm water.  If you want to make  your own sourdough starter click HERE for the instructions.   There will be more about baking with Sydney in future posts.  Right now I just want to make a piece of toast!

  1. Brilliant. I need to get my own Sydney going again - mice in the kitchen meant an untimely death for my starter but have been meaning to get another one going. Your bread looks so good... I can smell it from here

    1. Thanks, Sally. I am not sure how long Sydney will be around. I don't know if I am cut out for keeping starter alive for years like some people do but it was fun and I can always start again. : )

    1. This baking project was especially interesting. I am amazed at the vigour natural yeast has...and a little frightened. ; )

  4. I can't believe that's your first attempt at sourdough, it looks amazing, just like the stuff you find in swanky bakeries! Bet it tastes wonderful too...

  5. Thank you, Katharine! This made a good loaf of bread but I think it will improve as the starter matures. The tricky part will be keeping the starter alive. : )

  6. That does look very good indeed. It would be perfect with some of my home made plum jam!

  7. I absolutely love sourdough bread! The other three people here aren't that fond of it. Can you even imagine? What's not to like?? Since I would have to eat the entire loaf myself if I made it, I think I won't try this recipe just yet but it looks wonderful! You seem to have the magic touch for just about everything you touch! Send some magic this way, would ya? xoxo
