Oology and the Purloined Strawberry

I have a confession to make.  I did something I shouldn't have done.  It was an impluse, almost an involuntary action, a very weak moment. Let me explain what happened.

I have been doing some Chicken Sitting for my allotment friends. I always try to take a treat to feed to the hens while I collect the eggs.  Today I had some cornmeal scones for the ladies but I forgot to take them.

So, I saw some lovely long grass growing beside one of the strawberry beds.  The hens love fresh, green grass so I pulled a bit up for them to eat.  Then it happened.

I saw a fat, red, ripe strawberry growing just on the edge of the path.  Without a thought, I picked the fat strawberry and popped it into my mouth.  It was juicy and sweet and warm from being in the sun.

Immediately I was ashamed.  I've NEVER taken anything from the allotments that wasn't given to me by the owners.  I know, it was only ONE strawberry but it wasn't mine to eat.  It was forbidden fruit, a breach of trust, a PURLOINED strawberry!

I will tell the strawberry's grower what I did. Maybe bake them something nice to make up for my bad behaviour.  But I will not EVER knick a strawberry again!

  1. Dear Deb, I would be happy if other people were that way, when they steal our apples (not only one!) or (as happened some years ago) empty a complete cherry-tree! I think the owner of the strawberry will forgive you! One strawberry is less than the birds eat.... :-)

    1. Oh thank you. : ) You are right, the birds will eat more and this strawberry would have gone rotten had I not picked it. BUT I shouldn't have done it. It's a matter of betraying someone's trust. Shame on those who did that to you. I hope they got a tummy ache! : )X

  2. Around the corner and across the lane from me is a strawberry farm criss-crossed with public footpaths. There are signs at this time of year that say, "Pinch a few but not too many", and I figure if I have permission ...

So you know where to come next time the urge strikes ;)

    1. I suppose the strawberry farmer knows his berries will be pinched like it or not. And once you taste a beautiful berry you might buy lots more. I have a little berry patch in my back garden but no ripe berries YET! Maybe I should pick my first ripe one and use it to replace the one I ate. : )

  3. I think I might have done the same, though - I can't think of anything much more tempting!
