Mary Berry's Scones - The Search for Great Scones

We live in Devon, home of the Devonshire Cream Tea.   A cream tea consists of scones, clotted cream, jam and a pot of tea.  If you live in Devon you have to bake scones.  It's a law!  No, it's not really a law but it's expected.

I am searching for the perfect scone recipe and the search begins with Mary Berry's Devonshire Scones.  It's only logical really.

I've been told that to make a light scone you must keep the dough soft and not work it too much.   Mary uses a food processor to make her scones but I made mine by hand.  I think that is why they have a sightly rough appearance.

While they weren't the prettiest scones in Devon, they certainly tasted lovely.  Andy said he liked them better than my usual recipe so we are on the right path to the perfect scone.

  1. My dad's from Devon. We always make scones by hand - it's not worth washing up the processor bowl when they're so easy to do by hand!

    1. I am not a 'gadget' person. When it comes to food processors I rarely get ours out. I find they take more time to clean than the time they save. What part of Devon is your Dad from, the noisy cow asked. ; )

    1. Thank you! Scones are my emergency tea recipe. : ) I don't usually have clotted cream in the house but I always have good butter and jam. Add a pot of tea and you can entertain anyone! (almost)

  5. I've used Mary Berry's Special Scone recipe for about 30 years, will have to check and see if it's the same one with a different name! I usually make scones by hand, if I use the processor it's only to make the rubbing in bit and then add the milk and bring together by hand to reduce the 'working'. No scone making for me just now as kitchen is in bits again, so no oven :(
