Bags of Basil - An Herbal Experiement

My Aunt Gwen was a brilliant gardener.  She and Uncle Shanny had green fingers, thumbs and toes.  Even though they had gardened for decades, Aunt Gwen was always fascinated at how something so small and unprepossessing as a seed could produce such bounty. 



I have to say, I share her sense of wonder.  I know that seeds want to grow, it's what they are meant to do... but still, WOW! 



So you can imagine how excited I was when Chris and Jenny from Laurel Farm Herbs  asked if I'd like to take part in an herbal experiment.  Yes, please!  



A few days later, I received a parcel in the post.  It contained everything I needed to grow my own Basil; seed tray, compost, vermiculite and SEEDS!   I followed Chris and Jenny's instructions and in a couple of days I had seedlings.  Simple as that!  



Today, I potted my little seedlings into their own proper plant pots.  They still have lots of growing to do before they become Pesto, but they are well on their way.  I agree with Aunt Gwen,  it's amazing what you can get from just a few tiny seeds!

  3. I agree, it's always wonderful when seeds start to grow. Having said that only one of my bean seeds which were in pots on the windowsill has germinated. The others seem to have rotted. Oh well, think I'll have to start again!

    1. I love French beans and I always have a terrible time getting them to germinate. I think beans are troublesome but we mustn't give up.

    1. When I lived in the States I used to be a weaver. I did weaving, spinning and tatting demonstrations with some folks who used all natural plants to dye their wool. They were fascinating!

  5. I have each year some basil growing "somewhere". Mostly just sown into a pot... It really works, and fresh basil is sooooo delicious!
    Yours look strong and healthy! Perhaps I should start, too, with sowing ...

    1. This is the first time I've ever grown Basil. I was surprised at how well it germinated and how delicious the tiny seedlings are. I ate all of the little ones I thinned out. A chef friend said she was going to sow some to use as micro-vegetables. I think the baby basil seedlings would be great in a salad or sprinkled over a pasta dish as a garnish. : )

  6. Like you, I am forever fascinated by growing seeds! I've always got pots of basil growing somewhere, it seems to make me very happy. It maybe just the scent when you touch it or just a couple of leaves on top of a quick salad, there's something very special about it. Enjoy yours : ) xx

    1. It was so kind of Chris and Jenny to send me the Basil Kit. I have passed a few of the seedlings on to my neighbours and they were very happy to have them. Basil does seem to make people feel happy. There must be sunshine locked inside those leaves. ; )
