The Search for Great Scones Continues with Delia's Buttermilk Scones

A few months ago, I began searching for the best plain scone recipe to make for afternoon tea.   I am talking just plain scone; no cheese or fruit or chocolate chips allowed.

Our research began with Mary Berry's Scone Recipe  which was undeniably delicious.   Today I did a DELIA ....yes that's a proper word, it means to prepare one of Delia Smith's recipes.

The recipe I used was for Delia's Buttermilk Scones with clotted cream and raspberry butter.   I skipped the raspberry butter bit and went straight for home made jam and honey butter.

These scones were good but Andy said they were not very scone-like.   Translation:  these scones were more like American Buttermilk Biscuits in taste and texture.  Now I love Buttermilk Biscuits but this is all about scones so it's back to the drawing board and more research.

If you would like to join us in our research project click HERE to get the recipe for Delia's Buttermilk Scones.

  1. However they might taste, they certainly look good!

When I lived back home (South Carolina), I used to make scones ALL the time. My kids virtually grew up on them. But there was only one recipe I ever used, and that was from a dear tea friend in Maryland who used to run a tearoom up there. The recipe was from her Scottish grandmother and it never, ever, EVER failed. It's a fab recipe on its own, but also lends itself to 'extras' - nuts, fruit, chocolate, etc etc

Would love to share it with you, Debs. I've looked for an email address on your blog but don't see one. Feel free to contact me at info@teainengland.com

  2. I have been trying myself to find the best recipe but they always never rise right, or like you say the Delia ones are a bit biscuity! Denise, I know it's a bit cheeky but I'm about to visit your blog and ask you for the recipe! xx
