One Bad Apple.....

I have it on the best authority that when storing home grown apples, they should NEVER touch each other.  So if you have the space, line them up in a cool place leaving a bit of space between each apple.

I don't have enough shelf room in the garage for apple storage so each apple is wrapped in a bit of newspaper and placed in this old wire basket.

Most importantly, check the apples frequently to make sure you don't have any 'bad' ones... like this one.

Use any damaged apples to make something lovely, like pie or crumble.  After all, one bad apple can ruin the whole barrel!

  1. That is so good to know!! I have always seen folks store them in baskets but I will do anything to make fruit last longer so I will give this a go! You learn something new everyday!! Nicole xo

    1. I have also heard that you can pick green tomatoes, wrap them in newspaper, store them in a cool dark place and they will gradually ripen. It extends fresh tomato season for weeks! : D

  2. My apples in storage were eaten by mice - the rest are still on the tree where they are too high to reach. On another tree the apples are so small they aren't worth picking - I leave those for the blackbirds. I use the bruised ones for juicing and a few jars of apple sauce have been stored.

    1. You must have some very happy mice! ; ) I've been making apple sauce, too. It's my current favourite way to use bruised apples.
