Covent Garden Market 60's Style

Covent Garden in London, was originally the garden and orchards for Westminster Abbey. It became THE fruit and vegetable market for London. Today it's known for it's theatres and posh shops.  The fruit and vegetable market is gone!  Coffee bars and a Disney Store have replaced the market stalls.

Fortunately, some wonderful photos from the 1960's and 1970's have been published in Frances Lincoln's book Old Covent Garden.

Even though the photos are modern, you get the feel of the medieval markets.
Barrow boys must have pulled carts of fruits and veg through the streets of London just as this fellow did.

Shrewd traders struck deals, money exchanged hands...

Even the cart horses bargained for apples!

My romantic notions of old Covent Garden were shattered when I saw this photo of the Flower Ladies.  I was hoping they would be a bit more Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle.
